Manuka honey

Manuka honey has long been used by indigenous New Zealanders as a healing product for a variety of purposes, and is harvested from manuka trees that grow throughout New Zealand and parts of southern Australia. You're honey is precious, as there's only so much you can harvest in a year.

Manuka honey is characterized by a darker, more cloudy consistency than regular honey.

Tips for choosing manuka honey

Perhaps you're looking to buy some New Zealand souvenir manuka honey as a gift.Health food stores in ZeelandI Chemist Warehousein the following example.

But, as you can see, there are so many different types of manuka honey. The brands look similar, they're just different sizes, and it's really hard to choose.

In this case, you only need to look at two MGOs, UFM.

New Zealand's recognized grading standards for manuka honey are UMF and MGO.

[Unique Manjka Factor (UMF)]

UMF is a product labeling standard set by the New Zealand Manuka Association. It is a measure of how much antimicrobial activity a product has, usually compared to a standard disinfectant. Higher numbers mean higher efficacy.

[MGO]

:A method of rating manuka honey by its methylglyoxal content, an anti-inflammatory compound. Higher numbers indicate higher antimicrobial activity.

I've taken a product from New Zealand souvenir manuka honey, and if you look, you'll see MGO 400, UMF 13+. Sometimes there's only one indicator, sometimes there's both, like above.

Separation UMFMGO
Similar to regular honey (to a lesser extent)0+ ~ 5+0 ~ 30
Moderate antimicrobial activity5+ ~ 10+30 ~ 100
Highly antimicrobial 10+ ~ 15+100 ~ 400
Very high antimicrobial activity 15+ ~20+400 ~ 550

If you want to see the benefits of manuka honey, you'll want to look for one that has at least some antimicrobial activity. Personally, I think a UMF of 15+ and an MGO of 400+ is pretty good.

For reference, the above product (500 grams) is available at Chemist Warehouse and costs NZD $83.99.

Chemist Warehouse is easy to find, as there are many in your area - just search for it on Google Maps and it will come up. There are many companies that sell manuka honey, so there are usually different packages of the same honey.

So, don't get too hung up on the packaging, just focus on the UMF, MGO, and capacity. For reference, if you're gifting one, 500 grams seems to be a good size.

There are a number of local New Zealand sites, but 365Health has a great selection of manuka honey, so I recommend checking them out. The store is located on Queen Street in Auckland, so it's easy to get to, and you can see the products in person.

How to eat manuka honey

We've finished describing New Zealand souvenir manuka honey and which products to choose. Next up, we'll talk about how to eat manuka honey.

The most commonly known method is to simply take a spoonful on an empty stomach as soon as you wake up in the morning, but if you have a pre-existing medical condition, we recommend checking with your doctor before doing so.

And instead of adding sugar to drinks, you can add this manuka honey to them. I also think you can spread honey on bread like you would jam.
