1 way to get to the airport from Auckland City: SkyDrive

One of my favorite ways to get to Auckland Airport is by SkyDrive Bus, especially when it comes to getting to the airport from Auckland City. I'll show you how to book a SkyDrive bus and even give you a review, so make sure to read on.

How to get to Auckland Airport

Auckland has both a domestic and international airport. There are many ways to get there: super shuttles, taxis, Uber, and buses. But my top recommendation is to take the SkyDrive bus, especially if you're staying near the Sky Tower.

How to get from Auckland International Airport to your destination the other way aroundIf you're curious about this, you'll find information about it at the bottom of the article, so be sure to read all the way to the end.

1) SKYDRIVE

SkyDrive bus, one of the ways to get to the airport from Auckland City

The Skydrive Airport Bus is a shuttle bus service to and from Sky City in Auckland City and Auckland Airport (domestic and international). That's the SkyDrive bus in the photo above.

It's a double-decker bus, and you can leave your luggage on the first floor. If you've ever wanted to ride a double-decker bus, this is the perfect way to get to the airport from Auckland City.

2) How to reserve SkyDrive

There are two convenient ways to book a SkyDrive from Auckland City to the airport, including

  • Online booking (website)
  • On-site purchasing

How to reserve SkyDrive online

You can book the SkyDrive bus at the website below. The cost is NZD $20 for adults and NZD $16 for students (13+). However, we were told that a student ID is required when paying the student price.

Book a SkyDrive bus

When you click the Book button, you will see a screen like the one above, and you can choose your preferred time. The buses are every 30 minutes, with the first one at 5am and the last one at 10:30pm.

How to buy tickets on-site

For those who didn't book online in advance, you can pay the bus driver directly on site and board the SkyDrive bus. My personal opinion is that it's not too crowded, so you should be able to board on-site without too much pressure.

3) SkyDriver Bus Routes

  • Where to board: Behind Auckland Sky Tower (Hobson St)
  • 1st Drop-Off: Auckland Domestic Airport
  • 2nd Fault: Auckland International Airport

The Skydrive bus is located on Hobson St, the street behind the Auckland Sky Tower. This is also where you board the Intercity Bus.

That green bus over there is Intercity Bus, which travels all over New Zealand. If you don't have a car, you can use any of the above buses to get there, but expect it to take a little longer.

If you go to any of the above places, you'll find a restroom and maybe a small cafe to buy some snacks, because you'll need to stop at all of them before you get to your final destination.

SkyDrive Bus Information

I took a shot of the one above, on the Platform 7 pillar, which gives a quick overview of the SkyDrive bus.

The bus goes to Auckland Domestic Airport first, with a 20-minute ride to the airport.

Auckland Domestic Airports

After dropping off passengers at the domestic airport for a short time, we depart for the international airport below. It takes less than five minutes to get from the domestic to the international airport.

SkyDrive International Airports

When I arrived at Auckland International Airport, there were people waiting to get from the airport to Auckland City. I guess that's how they do the loop.

4) SkyDrive Bus Advantages

There are several ways to get to the airport from Auckland City, but my favorite was the SkyDrive bus.

While public buses are cheaper, I found that I had to carry my large luggage onto the bus and hold on to it tightly. It wasn't always comfortable while I felt like I was disturbing other people on the bus with my large luggage.

Taxis can be expensive, but they're the most convenient way to get to your doorstep, especially if you're not near the airport and are traveling from the North Shore area of Auckland.

In fact, if you live in a no-show area, you'll have to travel to Auckland City to use the SkyDrive bus, which can be a hassle with luggage. To be fair, the only people I would recommend the SkyDrive bus to are those who live in Auckland City.

It was a double-decker bus with two seats on each side. The inside of the bus was very clean.

Front of the SkyDrive bus, 2nd floor

If you like double-decker buses, this is for you. I made a reservation, got on first, was one of the first to board, and got a seat near the front of the second floor. I put my heavy luggage in the storage area on the first floor and sat back.

Drinks with lids are okay on the bus, but food, alcohol, and other things like that are not allowed. Other than that, you can refer to the guide above.
