4 Tips for Choosing a Used Car in New Zealand

New Zealand doesn't have as much public transportation as we do in the US, so a car is essential for getting around. Of course, you can buy a new car, but I think a used car is the next best option. Here's how to buy a used car in New Zealand.

There are three main ways to buy a used car in New Zealand: through a used car buying website, through a social media group, or in person at a used car lot.

  • How to use the Korea Post website
  • How to buy a used car through a Facebook group
  • How to buy a used car in person at a used car lot

I've bought used cars in New Zealand in person at a used car lot, and I've also tried to buy used cars in New Zealand through Facebook groups. While you can buy a used car in any of these ways, you may be wondering how you can be sure that the car is in good condition.

If you're not familiar with the car, bring a friend who is, or if you don't have a friend, ask a professional to view the car with you to avoid any surprises later.

Or maybe you've taken a look at it and you really like it, and you want to ask the owner if you can take it to a shop you know and have them check it out, but then the cost of the inspection might be another issue, so I guess that's an option you could try if you can afford it.

1) How to use the TradMe website

The trademe websiteis the most used website by New Zealanders for transactions, especially for buying a house, renting a house, or finding a flat, but many people also use it to buy used cars in New Zealand.

To buy a used car, you first need to select a used car instead of a new one, which you can do in the photo above by checking Used in the menu labeled "New & Used" and searching for it.

You can search by specific make, model, location, year, price, fuel, and more, so it's a great way to see what you're looking for. However, due to the sheer volume of listings, we recommend that you specify a price you're willing to pay.

Because it's a waste of time to look at cars that are over budget anyway. To show you, I searched for a used car in New Zealand priced from $3,000 to $5,000 New Zealand dollars. The search brings up a lot of cars, and I chose my favorite blue one.

This is a 2006 Demio model from Mazda Corporation. The used car price is listed as $4,400. There is information about the vehicle under the vehicle name, and you can get a vehicle information report through motorweb.co.nz under the background check menu. Of course, this will cost you a small fee.

Still, if you're a nitpicker, you'll probably find it easier to look at it. If you like the car, you can contact the seller via the 'Email the seller' button. Before you make a purchase, be sure to view the car's condition and take it for a test drive.

Sometimes you'll see a button that's not an "email the seller" button, it's a "bid" button, and you'll see a closing time, and you put in your bid, and whoever writes the highest bid wins. That's an auction.

2) How to use the Korea Post website

If you don't feel comfortable meeting locals and speaking English, check out New Zealand's largest Korean community website The Korea Postfor the most part. Most of the trades are posted by Koreans, so it's almost exclusively Korean.

By the way, even if you use the Trademe website, you shouldn't worry too much about English when you meet them in person, because they are in a position to sell you a car, and they will understand if you say a few words or short English sentences.

And don't worry, they'll be nice to you because they're selling you a product.

The Korea Post website is a little more intuitive. You can do this by selecting the Cars menu at the top of the homepage above. You'll then see a list of new or used cars, and you can enter any title that catches your eye.

The title is organized like this: year, make, model, and how much, so if you have a model and price range in mind, it will be easier to choose.

When you enter, the car's owner has entered information about the car. I used to have a lot of phone numbers, but nowadays I use KakaoTalk open chat rooms. In any case, I think you should give us a call, take a look, test drive, and make a decision.

The owner is Korean, so you'll feel more comfortable talking to him, and there's less pressure. I actually posted my used car in New Zealand on Korea Post, but I didn't hear back from him much.

If you still contact me to buy it, I will give you about $100 less, and I set the price like that, but I think my car was not popular.

3) How to buy a used car through a Facebook group

While Trademe and Korea Post are a bit more formal, buying a used car in New Zealand through a Facebook group is a bit more casual.

First of all, you use Facebook a lot in Korea, but you really need to join Facebook here in New Zealand. First of all, we use KakaoTalk a lot in Korea, but we use Facebook Messenger a lot in New Zealand. First of all, I'll tell you the Facebook group for buying a used car in New Zealand.

  • Cheap cars auckland
  • Cars 10k under, Auckland only, sell, buy, swap

There are actually more if you do a search within the Facebook group, but too many can be confusing, so this is all you need to know.

While not all used cars for sale in New Zealand on TradeMe and Korea Post websites are like that, many of them are priced above what you'd expect to pay for a used car, because no one wants to sell their car cheap unless they're in a hurry.

But the advantage of using Facebook groups is that you can find used cars that are a little bit cheaper. I'm not saying that there aren't some almost-new, expensive brand-name models that are going for a lot of money, but I'm saying that Facebook groups are the place where a lot of people post them for less.

The Auckland used cars sell Facebook group has a bunch of used cars for sale, and I've pulled them up. This way, if you see something you like, you can contact them directly via Facebook Messenger. I like the car you posted, can I come take a look at it?

You can view it, even test drive it, and if you don't like it, you can come back and say you'll think about it and get back to us. No pressure, just be casual.

I saw a car in this Facebook group when I was looking to buy a used car in New Zealand, and contacted them. I even test drove it and realized that the price was a bit high for the performance.

I said no, because I can get the price down a little bit, and they put a little bit of pressure on me, saying that they have a lot of people coming to view it anyway, and I just played it cool and said I'll get back to you later and texted them and said I'm sorry, it's over budget.

If you want to download Facebook Messenger, you can do so quickly using the buttons below. The App Store and Google Play are both available.

4) Go to a used car lot and buy a used car in person

You can also go to a used car market to buy a used car in New Zealand. You can find locations by searching used car or branded used car market names on Google Maps.

I bought my first used car in New Zealand from a used car store on the North Shore called Auto station.

At the time, I had just come from Korea and didn't know anything, so the agent introduced me to them. I think I bought a 2006 Nissan Note for around $7300 (bought in 2016).

The reason I bought it there was that the people who worked there were Korean, so there was no burden to communicate with them. Since it was a used car, it had to be checked regularly, so I bought it there.

Second degree Turners The second car was a 2005 Mazda Demio that I think I bought for $4800, which is an auction car store that mostly sells cars at auction, but also sells the cheaper cars that they have.

If you're looking to find a cheap used car model at Turners, you can use the Turners website link below to quickly find the model you're looking for.

Before buying a used car from Turners, I went to a number of used car lots, and one that stands out in my mind is 0800 Best Deal Cars Onehunga, because I saw a car I liked on their website, but when I went there, they said they didn't have it.

If that's the case, I don't understand why they put used cars on the website, maybe they're using it as bait. I've just been looking at the other cars here and there.

When you go to a used car market in person to buy a used car in New Zealand, it looks like the picture above: the price, year, and so on are all on the front windshield, so you can take a look, and if you like what you see, you can talk to the staff and the process begins.

5) Tips for choosing how to buy a used car in New Zealand

  • Recommended for used car lots

With so many ways to buy a used car, you may be a little confused about how to go about it. First, if you have a decent budget ($10K+), you may be better off going to a used car lot and buying from a dealer.

Since you're spending a certain amount of money, I think it's better to buy from a used car lot where it's a little safer than a private party, and you're more likely to be able to ask about future maintenance.

  • Unconditionally affordable within a 3K-7K budget

If you're of the "I just want the car to run without too much trouble" mindset, you're probably focused on price. If you're desperate to buy a cheap used car, you're better off utilizing Trademe, Facebook groups, and the like.

If you don't plan to be in New Zealand for a long time, or you're simply buying a car to travel and commute to work, you don't need to buy an expensive car.

Instead, many cars are sold privately, so it's worth remembering that a bargain car may have problems. New Zealand is known for its high labor costs, and car-related repairs can be expensive.

Finalize

Today we've covered 4 ways to buy a used car in New Zealand and tips on how to choose the right one. Most Japanese cars are imported into New Zealand as used cars.

So when a Japanese car breaks down, it's less of a problem to replace parts. For New Zealand, which imports almost everything, it can be harder to find parts for rare vehicles, and they can be more expensive, so it may be better to stick with more common models and vehicles.

Be sure to weigh your options, and if you're the type of person who is meticulous and must inspect a used car before you buy, be sure to take advantage of professional and referral opportunities.

Typically, vehicle owners will tell you that they had no issues at their WOF (New Zealand One Yearly Inspection), but it's a very basic vehicle inspection and doesn't guarantee that your vehicle won't have issues in the future.

However, if you're just going to drive it for a year or two and then sell it, or just get rid of it, it's probably not a bad idea to buy a used car at a lower price.

I've had my car for about 6-7 years and have never had any problems with it. Most of the repairs I've done have been when I've gone to Wof and they've pointed out the problematic parts and I've fixed them.

The final decision is yours. I hope my article helps you make a good choice.
