In this article, we'll give you our top picks for budget accommodation in the center of Dunedin, New Zealand, and hopefully help you plan your trip to Dunedin.
Dunedin, New Zealand
While most people in New Zealand live in Auckland and Wellington on the North Island, there are a few cities on the South Island that have a lot of people living there as well. Dunedin is one of them.
When you think of Dunedin, New Zealand, the first thing that comes to mind is the University of Otago, the top-ranked medical school in New Zealand, and the road that once held the Guinness Book of World Records for the steepest road in the world.
For me, Dunedin still stands out as a city that has its own color among similar New Zealand cities, but it's still a city that has a lot of exoticism to it.
Dunedin, New Zealand Accommodation Recommendation The Stables

For me, I always try to stay in a central location so that I can walk around my favorite parts of town at any time of the day or night, and The Stables' location was great in that regard.
The location, just a five-minute walk from the main street in the center of Dunedin that connects to the University of Otago, won me over.

2) Exterior view of The Stables

The Stables is my favorite place to stay in Dunedin, New Zealand, because I personally think it's beautiful.
If you enter through the main entrance above, you'll find a parking lot, and you'll be able to see the architecture of The Stables. The first building you see is not the house, but if you go straight down the street and turn right, you'll see a very pretty house.
The house in the photo seemed to be a dormitory for students at the university.

On my way up from dinner, I snapped a picture because it was so pretty. I wanted to have a quick beer on the bench in front of the house.

The Stables has an old-fashioned looking iron staircase leading up to the main entrance. There is no reception, just a locked door, and you will receive your room password via email or message from the manager once you have made your reservation.
I never saw the manager's face either. And as soon as you walk in the front door, to the left is a communal kitchen where you can cook something simple.

It was the cleanest, most cafe-like shared kitchen I've ever stayed in in New Zealand. The stone floors gave it an exotic feel, and there were basic pots and pans, a toaster, and a microwave to make simple meals.
And unfortunately, I didn't see anyone cooking during my stay, which means that if you're a cook, you'll be able to use it without anyone noticing.

Dunedin, New Zealand accommodation recommendations The Stables is a two-story house. If you're planning to tie up in the bunkhouse, you'll walk through the front door and up a stunning iron staircase.
3) Inside The Stables

As soon as I walked in the door, I saw a big window that let in tons of light. There was a big bed, a refrigerator, a closet, a desk, and of course a TV and a comfy chair to sit in.

And the second thing that stood out to me was the ceiling, because it wasn't a very big room, but it felt big because of the openness of the ceiling.
It felt cozy, like I was bundling up in a cabin.

The bathroom had a clean and uncluttered design, decorated in tones that matched the rest of the property. Shampoo, body wash, and conditioner were all available. The shower was a little disappointing in that it was fixed and you couldn't adjust the angle, but it wasn't an inconvenience.
